After the country’s first free and fair elections in 1994, the institute assumed a leading role in providing a professional black perspective on property bills, as well as any property and funding legislation to be passed by the new democratically-elected government.

This partnership with IREM not only assists in raising local standards of commercial property management but also assists in fast-tracking access to the industry for new entrants
This collaboration is designed to create a pathway for qualified property practitioners, particularly those who have completed the PPRA’s Principal Real Estate Agent qualification, to further distinguish themselves with a globally respected credential in residential property management. The collaboration builds on the successful integration of IREM-developed content in PPRA’s Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme.
SAQA ensures that IREM’s international qualifications are aligned with the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). This alignment provides the legal and educational foundation for IREM designations to be recognized within the South African regulatory environment.
The partnership facilitates access to internationally recognized certifications, such as the Certified Property Manager (CPM®) and Accredited Residential Manager (ARM®) designations, for UP students and alumni. Students gain access to IREM’s global network of nearly 20,000 leaders, providing exposure to international standards in commercial and residential management.
Wits was the first university outside the United States to receive IREM accreditation for its real estate programs. Students holding a Postgraduate Diploma in Property Development and Management from Wits can fast-track their way to becoming a Certified Property Manager (CPM®) by completing three specific IREM courses and a final exam.
